Stork Craft Issues Largest Crib Recall In U.S. History

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc has voluntarily issued the recall of over 2.1 million Stork Craft drop side cribs. The recall includes almost 147,000 cribs that have the Fisher Price logo.

Approximately 1.2 million of the cribs were distributed in the U.S. and 968,000 cribs were distributed throughout Canada. Parents are urged to stop using these cribs immediately and contact the company to request a free repair kit.

The repair kit can be used to convert the drop side crib to a fixed side. The plastic hardware can deform or break and some of the parts may even disappear. Another problem with the cribs is that they are sometimes installed upside down.

These problems can result in the drop side detaching in one or more of the corners of the crib creating space between the side and the mattress. This space can allow the bodies of infants and toddlers to become trapped and suffocate.

There have been 67 incidents reported in the United States and Canada has reported 43 incidents. The recall only includes those cribs made by Stork Craft that have the drop side and were distributed from January 1993 until October 2009. Cribs with the Fisher Price logo were distributed from October 1997 until December 2004.

You can contact Stork Craft to order the free repair kit by calling 877-274-0277 or visit their website at www.storkcraft.com.
