While many office furniture manufacturers started making their products more green years ago, some smaller companies are finding it harder to make the conversion. But, by the fall every company in the office furniture business will have a green guide to follow.

The Business and Industrial Furniture Manufacturers Association has been working on compiling the green guide for for two years and it’s almost ready to distribute. The guide will list plastic resins that emit very little or no chemicals at all, natural alternatives to stuff cushions and upholstered office furniture and many other green ideas.

As a symbol for customer awareness products will earn either silver, gold or platinum status for their environmentally friendly construction. Some things points toward status will be awarded will depend on the material toxicity, use of recycled materials, amount of fuel and other resources required to produce the product and the impact production has on greenhouse gases.

The guide lines are the first of it’s kind to be implemented nationwide and is expected to need revisions within just three years. It’s a good thing for the environment, but may be a slight burden on smaller business to implement.
