Office Cubicles Marks 40 years

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the cubicle to the office.

The concept of using upright panels to create separate work stations for individual workers was introduced by furniture designer Robert Propst.

One advantage of using cubicles is the extra added wall space, or surface area. The panels can be used for shelves, memo boards, calendars, and more.

Before the introduction of the cubicle offices generally consisted of rows of desks with each person being limited to the area available on their own desktop.

Opinions vary as to whether the cubicle or an open office environment are better, but in the end it all depends upon the needs of each individual office.
