MFA Holds Annual Golf Tournament

The Mississippi Furniture Association recently held a golf benefit in an effort to try to keep furniture jobs in the state. The annual tournament attracted almost 100 golfers and raised close to $12,000 for the groups programs.

Part of the money will be used to support the groups work in lobbying state leaders for the benefit of the furniture industry. The association is a coalition of furniture manufacturers and others involved in the industry and has also been working to get tax credits that can save some of the related jobs in the state.

Ken Pruett, president of the Mississippi Furniture Association, said that they really appreciated everyone that came out in support for the golf tournament. He added that the leaders in the industry planned to meet again soon to discuss what their next steps will be.

Earlier this year and incentive bill that was backed by the association was approved by the legislature. But, the bill was later vetoed by Governor Haley Barbour who said that the bill would cost too much. Barbour said that the tax credits available from the state were designed to support new jobs that paid more wages.
