California Extends The Formaldehyde Deadline

The California Air Resources Board has granted furniture retailers a six month extension to the formaldehyde deadline. This extension will give them more time to clear out inventories that won’t comply with the first phase of the strict formaldehyde standards.
Now, furniture retailers, distributors, fabricators and importers will have until December 31, 2010 to clear out all of the non-compliant inventories. The previous deadline was set as July 1 of next year. The new extension will grant some categories an extra 19 months from the original deadline.
State officials decided to grant the extension due to the economic slowdown that has made it difficult for retailers to move their inventory. The agency said that the new extension will only affect the sell-through dates and is not meant to encourage more imports and sales of products that don’t comply with the restrictions.
