Ashley Furniture announced that it will be reducing employees by 5% at their Ripley and Ecru Mississippi plants. The layoff will add up to around 2oo employees that will be left without jobs.

One of the largest furniture makers in the nation, Ashley Furniture employees approximately 3,500 people. The lag in sales has meant drastic moves for the company to remain competitive.

While the real estate market is hurting a lot of business’, the furniture industry has been hit hard with slumping sales. The state of the economy and rising fuel prices have forced consumers to cut back on unnecessary purchases.

Ashley Furniture finished up last year with around $3 billion dollars in sales. The total put them in the first place as the United State’s top furniture seller.
