January 24th, 2010 at 07:00am Under Furniture News

Moosehead Furniture, a case goods manufacturer managed to keep from shutting down by filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Several prospective buyers were standing by anticipating an auction of the equipment to begin when the filing gave the company a last minute reprieve.

There were around 200 people, some with long trailers and trucks waiting for an auction to begin in the parking lot. And, some had even traveled across country in hopes of getting a bargain. The auction company was notified by phone that the shutdown had been canceled.

This marked the second time that Moosehead Furniture was scheduled to close. In 2007, a small group of investors purchased the company after the family that had owned it for 60 years announced that it would close because of the competition from imports with lower prices.

Decision Made On High Point Zoning

January 20th, 2010 at 07:00am Under Furniture News

Attendees in the city council chambers broke into applause as the council voted against a proposed market overlay district zoning. The zoning would have created a boundary that would be centered on the showrooms in downtown High Point. The proposed issue had drawn the fire of numerous building owners that feared if they were left outside the zone their property values would fall.

The city had originally planned to vote on alternative plans that would have increased the size of the district from the initial 249 acres. The new proposal would have included several properties that were not in the original plan and it also included a growth area were new showrooms would need to be built.

The main goal of the proposed zoning was to open areas outside the boundary so that they could be used for purposes other than showrooms. While existing showrooms located outside the district already in use would have been included, they would have lost that status if they remained unoccupied by tenants for four consecutive markets.
