ECOngress To Be Hosted By The World Market Center

The World Market Center and Sustainable Furnishings Council will be hosting ECOngress the day before the opening of the winter market. The event will be geared toward discussing the impact that the Lacey Act will have on the home furnishings industry.

The event, which is called teh One Good World ECOngress: Sourcing Legal Wood and Building Green Markets will be at the World Market Center on January 31 from 10:45 a.m. until 6 p.m. according to the SFC. This event will bring together environmental groups, landowners, academic institutions, manufacturers, retailers and the United States government.

The sessions will focus primarily on the policy, manufacturing and consumer marketing and will consist of both presentations and panel discussions. The event will host sixteen different speakers that will represent various organizations such as the Global Forest and Trade Network and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Furniture Today Extends Las Vegas Market Intro Deadline

The deadline has been extended for companies to submit their information and photos of any bedding and furniture products that they wish to introduce at the upcoming Las Vegas Market to Furniture Today. The submission date has been rescheduled to Wednesday, January 6 to allow companies more time.

Photographs need to be high quality, high resolution digital format four color shots. They should also be submitted in either EPS, TIFF, or JPG at 300 dpi and be at least 4 inches by 5 inches. More information about submitting your photos can be found at FurnitureToday.com.

Las Vegas Summer Market Date Changes

Officials at the World Market Center have announced that they are rescheduling the summer Las Vegas Market to August 2 through the 6. This move is being made a year after the center pushed the summer market up to mid September. The new change is an effort by officials to try to create two mega markets per year.

The mega market concept will integrate an anchor event that consists of home furnishings along with other events associated with the industry. These events will be designed to try to attract a broader range of buyers and optimize the sales opportunities for business that participate in the market.

Ikea Makes Large Donation To Tree Canada

Ikea Canada is making a donation of C$280,000 that was raised by it’s Bag the Bag campaign to Tree Canada, a non-profit organization which encourages Canadians to plant trees and care for them in both rural and urban environments.

In addition to the donation raised from the Bag the Bag campaign, the company will also continue to contribute a certain portion of the annual sales from their Christmas trees. The trees are available at 11 of the company’s stores throughout Canada.

“Environmental sustainability continues to be anchored in everything we do at Ikea,” said Kerri Molinaro, president of Ikea Canada. “It is clear that our customers take great pride in supporting Ikea Canada’s commitment to responsible retailing.”

The Bag the Bag campaign is geared toward elimination the use of plastic bags at all Ikea stores. Funds from the campaign are to be re-invested into the annual partnership with Tree Canada’s Pick a Tree Plant a Tree. So far, the program has helped plant over 14,000 trees.

2009 Sage Award Goes To Copeland Furniture

Copeland Furniture was awarded the second annual Sage Award at the AHFA’s second Sustainability Summit that was held last week. The event is sponsored by the American Home Furnishings Alliance and Cargill BioH Polyols. The award recognizes excellent sustainable practices in the home furnishings business.

For year, Copeland has manufactured case goods using wood that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Copeland’s use of certified wood has aided in the company receiving Silver Exemplary Status which is given from the Sustainable Furnishings Council, of which Copeland is a founding member.

The company has eight product groupings that qualify for FSC certification and sources a majority of the wood they use within 500 miles of the plant located in Vermont. Hickory Chair was honored with the first Sage Award last year.

Great American Furniture Services Opens Office In charlotte

Great American Furniture, a sales specialist and liquidator based in Illinois, has expanded their reach with a new office in charlotte North Carolina. The new addition is located at Ballantyne Corporate Place and will be led by Chris Noll, Great American Senior Vice President.

Company president, Jeff Yellen, said that the company may eventually move the corporate office to Charlotte as well, but that decision hasn’t been finalized. “North Carolina is the heart of the home furnishing industry,” he said, adding that the office gives Great American “a closer connection to the industry and all the fine people that are associated with the furniture business.”

Unfinished Furniture Association Groups At Las Vegas Market

For the very first time, members of the Unfinished Furniture Association will show as a group from February 1 through the 5 at the Las Vegas Market. “Some members of this association have shown at previous markets and grouping them together in one well-situated destination will be an added convenience for our attendees interested in this growing category,” said Philip McKay, senior vice president of the World Market Center here.

The Unfinished Furniture Association is an international association of manufacturers, sales organizations and retailers in Canada, the Caribbean and the United States. Their trademark certification program, Real Wood Furniture Finished Your Way, give brand support to all of the members that provide customers with wood furniture and custom finishing.

“UFA is pleased to provide this opportunity for its member manufacturers to interact with member and non-member retailers at the Las Vegas Market” said the association’s president, Bob Lamar. It was also announced that they will hold the 20th annual trade show between July 11 and 13 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

High Point Pre-Market Schedule

High Points spring pre-market is set to run through March 15 and 16. And, sponsors of the fall High Point pre-market have already announced the dates for next years fall events. The fall 2010 pre-market is set for September 13 and 14.

Pre-market is held around a month prior to each High Point Market. The main goal of pre-market is to give retailers the chance to preview the major product collections, strengthen their relationships with the main vendors and secure distribution.

This years fall market is sponsored by three of High Point’s showroom operators and 24 exhibitors. Just like last fall, this falls pre-market will coincide with the first two days of the Las Vegas Market that will run from September 13 to 16.
