Haworth Inc. has more than 2,800 workers in Michigan and employs almost 8,000 workers world-wide.
Julie Smith, a spokesperson for Haworth, said the actions were a necessary response to current market conditions as well as part of their preparation for what is expected to be a slow year ahead.
Haworth is the second major furniture maker to announce job cuts in the area. Herman Miller had already cut out about 150 jobs in recent months.

According to the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) office furniture sales grew by 5.5 percent through 2007 even though the national economy experienced some slow down during the same time period.
Office furniture shipments in North America grew to a total of just under 11.5 billion dollars. Although this was a significant increase over 2006 it was a smaller increase than was seen in the two preceding years.
Tom Reardon, Executive Director of BIFMA, stated that growth in the industry is not expected to increase significantly in 2008.

When it comes to selecting the furniture for your office you don’t want to cut corners. If you make the wrong decision about what types of desks and chairs to buy you will regret it.
Low quality chairs will lead to aches and pains in your back, legs, and neck. If they are provided to your staff they will be uncomfortable and unable to relax. This is because they are not designed with ergonomics in mind.
Try to get the best deals you can on your office chairs, but don’t sell yourself short. Buy chairs with good lumbar support and ergonomics.

Recent news about the health of the furniture industry has been optimistic. Does this mean that the furniture market has topped the hill on is it’s way up?
It is true that furniture companies have been consolidating and re-organizing to deal with the lower sales over the past couple of years. Some have even went so far as to file for bankruptcy.
Furniture companies who were able to make it through the past couple of years have proven resolve and dedication.
Reports have indicated that furniture exports are rising while imports are declining. This could also mean good news for the U.S furniture industry.

A good computer desk is more than just a place to set your monitor and your papers.
If you spend a lot of time working at a desk it can become an extension of your personality as you add personal items such as photos and “toys”. Personal items like this on a staff member’s desk makes them feel more comfortable and “at home”. This in turn will increase morale and productivity.
Some offices discourage the personalizing of desks. I think those offices are missing out on yet another key way to increase morale and productivity. Smart managers are always on the lookout for ways to improve morale and productivity in the office.
