Herman Miller Furniture’s Integrated Metal Technologies has agreed to a new three year labor contract with Local 2410 of the United Steel Workers Union.
As a result of the contract union workers received wage increases, spread out over the next three years, as well as better retirement benefits.
Randy Pelfresne, President of Local 2410, stated that union members were well pleased with the Herman Miller contract which was approved by a 178 to 34 vote on December 15, 2007.

The Boston Baby Furniture chain closed down unexpectedly in March of 2006.
Employees of the company claimed that they did not receive their paychecks for the final weeks they worked.
They also claimed not to have been paid for vacation time that had been earned.
Harvey Slobodkin, former Boston Baby president, has now agreed to repay twelve former employees in a settlement that amounts to $41,840.

Hooker Furniture has announced a recall on about 1300 bunk beds.
The beds were manufactured in Vietnam and Malaysia and were sold in Hooker Furniture stores throughout the country from Aug. 2005 to Aug. 2007.
The bunk beds have a design flaw which makes it possible for a child to slip between gaps in some of the parts. This flaw could potentially lead to a child being strangled.
There have been no reports of injuries due to the recalled bunk beds. The recall is meant to prevent future mishaps and possible deaths.

Shermag Furniture has announced that they will be closing four of their eight plants. The plants are located in New Brunswick and Quebec, Canada. 320 workers will be losing their jobs.
Claude Pichette, Chairman of the board, stated that the move to close the plants was a response to the housing slow down in the United States and increased competition in the Asian markets.
After the closings are finalized Shermag will have a remaining work force of 750 people. Three years ago, in 2004, the furniture manufacturer employed 2,400 workers. Since that time Shermag has been hit with lay offs and plant closings.

Sauder Woodworking has placed a recall on a particular TV stand. About thirty of the TV stands were sold at Wal-Mart stores in August, 2007. The retail price on the TV stands was about $90.00.
If you purchased a TV stand from Wal-Mart that was manufactured by Sauder Woodworking check the model number. The model number affected by the recall is 402806 and the UPC code is 0004266643392.

Red Barron Furniture And Bedding has sold it’s Williamsport, Maryland store building in a recent auction.
Randy Barron, the company owner, said that Paul Crampton Contractors won the auction and has paid 1.25 million dollars for the building.
Red Barron Furniture also sold off a lot of furniture and most of their fleet of trucks.
About two years ago Randy’s brother, and partner, died of a heart attack. Only a few months later Randy began to have health problems as a result of a neuromuscular disease.

Furniture Brands International has signed a contract with AT&T to upgrade it’s network service to the newer Multiprotocol Label Switching, or MPLS.
With MPS a company can be more secure when users access the Internet as the connection is made through a dedicated and secure Internet port or circuit.
In the near future we should expect to see much more widespread use of MPLS. Not only are there many advantages, but there is a cost savings of up to 40%.
Furniture Brands sells over two billion dollars in furniture per year, now they expect to keep more of their money by reducing their expenses.
