Furniture Brands Reporting False Decline in Sales?

Furniture Brands, makers of well known furniture brands such as Broyhill and Thomasville has stated that it’s sales are expected to decline by 12% during the third quarter of 2007. In a previous month they made the same claims, but the final numbers ended up being much better than they had predicted.

It has been said that Furniture Brands is giving unrealistically low figures to analysts with the hopes of surpassing expectations.

Steelcase Buys Furniture Manufacturer Ultra Group Co Ltd

Steelcase Inc. of Grand Rapids, Michigan has announced it’s intention to purchase Chinese office furniture company Ultra Group Co. Ltd. for 13.3 million dollars.

The sale is expected to be finalized before the end of 2007 if approved by the shareholders.

Ultra Group Co. Ltd. currently employs 1,000 workers. Steelcase Inc. intends to keep the workers employed when it takes control of the plant.

Malaysia Slated to Plant More Trees For Furniture Production

Tan Kok Hong, a committee chairman for International Trade and Industry of Malaysia, has announced plans to plant 26,000 hectares of trees in Johor for the purpose of providing lumber for furniture manufacturers.

Malaysia is the second leading country in the production of furniture in Asia. China is recognized as the number one producer. According to Tan, China targets low quality cheap furniture, but Malaysia will focus on higher end quality products.

Creative Interiors Announces the Closing of Virginia Plant

Creative Interiors will be closing the Carysbrook manufacturing facilities in Virginia by November 23, 2007 and will be consolidated with a plant in Appomattox. The Carysbrook factory currently employs 170 workers.

President of the company, Phil Miller says that demand for imported products has led to the decision to close the plant.

Miller also said that the company will move some of their equipment to the Appomattox plant and may add new jobs there if order rates are sufficient.
