During the 1990s the office furniture industry saw a lot of growth. Much of the economy was changing from being driven by manufacturing to more of a focus on service related businesses. The need for customer service personnel led to both new office facilities and the expansion of existing ones.
During the first three years of the 21st century shipments of office furniture fell by more than 30%. This represented the biggest drop in furniture shipments for more than 20 years.
Currently, the market for office furniture has seen somewhat of a comeback. Sales are improving slowly and analysts are expecting a steady albeit slow increase in office furniture sales through 2010.

One of the greatest computer furniture accessories ever devised was the keyboard tray.
The keyboard tray took the keyboard off the desk top freeing up valuable space and placing the keyboard at a more comfortable (Ergonomics) level for the user.
Now there is something even better than the keyboard tray and that is the keyboard arm. Unlike a standard tray which just simply slides forward and backward, the keyboard arm actually tilts and swivels.
A user can literally adjust the position of their keyboard quickly and easily for perfect comfort and ease of use.

These days companies may be worried more about layoffs than they are about their office design. Fortunately there are ways you can improve your office without spending too much money.
Plants have been shown to have a positive affect on people. By adding plants around the office you can help give your staff a feeling of relaxation which will help them to concentrate on their tasks. Plants also work to purify the air and boost oxygen levels.
If taking care of the plants is a concern you can opt for high quality artificial plants, but this should only be a last resort.

It would be a mistake for a manager to assume what the people in the office feel and think about the setup and design of the office.
You should consider having a meeting with your staff to ask them what they think and to let them air their opinions and ideas. Alternately, a questionnaire could be distributed.
Too often an office is designed without taking the actual users into consideration. Many times the designer is more interested in how the office looks than how it functions.
With suggestions and ideas from your staff you will be able to design and organize your office to achieve better morale and higher productivity.

Too many offices try to maintain a uniform appearance, but this can cause the office staff to feel like they are stuck in a rut and insignificant. Naturally, that will lead to lower efficiency and a faster turnover in labor.
Take a look at your office. Are the staff happy and comfortable in their work environment? Giving them more freedom to personalize their desks and work areas will do a lot to stimulate their interest and morale in their job. It will make them feel more “at home” which will in turn increase the level of morale.
Being strict with how your staff is able to decorate and arrange their desks and work spaces is a sure way to lower morale and decrease overall productivity. Take a look at your own office and look over your rules to see if you can make changes that will give your staff more freedom in performing their tasks.

When clients and other visitors come to your business do they have a nice comfortable chair to in sit if they have to wait? You want their wait to be as short as possible, but while they are waiting they should feel relaxed and as comfortable as possible.
A nice reception or waiting area will make a positive impression on your guests. They will appreciate your hospitality and be more eager to do business with you.
Make it a point to go out and check your reception area or waiting room chairs. Go ahead, sit in them for a little while. Are they comfortable? Do they provide a good cushion and lumbar support? If you don’t feel comfortable sitting in them it is time to shop for new ones.

There are very few offices that are exactly alike, however one thing most offices share in common is a shortage of space. Very often it is not a matter of how much room you have, but how you “budget” it.
A well planned office will be more space efficient and organized. Unfortunately many offices aren’t planned, but simply grow as new furniture and accessories are needed. Take a look at your office to find ways to save on space and attain better organization.
There are many other ways to maximize the space you have available, but here are a few suggestions:
- Replace one or more standard computer work stations with wall mounted stations.
- Mobile computer carts are great for work stations that need to be moved around, they can also easily be stored when not in use.
- Placing CPUs in under-the-desk CPU holders will free up a lot of desk space.
